A boy named Hero receives a letter about his father's death. His father's wish was for Hero to become a Robo Commander, so he joins a group called the Steel Hearts, where he meets Ernest, Harry and Marcia, who teach him the basics and help him get his Custom Robo license.
Together, Hero and the Steel Hearts must face a new threat, a living Robo named Rahu, who was the inspiration behind the Custom Robo battle scene many years ago.
Battle Robos in Holosseums and reduce the opponent's HP to 0, winning new parts for your Robo. You can customise your Robo's chassis, gun, bomb, pod and legs, allowing you to face stronger opponents.

The working title for the GameCube was the "Dolphin", and many N64 and GameCube games made reference to this.
One of the upgrades you can acquire in this game is called the Dolphin Pod: A pair of shoulder-mounted pod launchers shaped like dolphins. You can also get Dolphin Pod upgrades – the "Dolphin G" and the "Orca".

During the game you find out about a group called the "Z-Syndicate". In the park area, a number of NPC try to guess what the "Z" could stand for. One suggests "Zelda" (the title character of The Legend of Zelda series) and another suggests "Zebes" (the planet that provides the setting for Metroid and Super Metroid).
