Select a puppy from a choice of 9 breeds from the kennels and take it home to raise. You can exercise your dog, take it for walks and play games. Over time, the dog will learn to recognise you and your voice commands and become more friendly and obedient.
As you play, you can also collect three breeds of cat from the kennels who play with you and your puppy and need your care.
There are three versions of the game available, each containing different breeds. As you play, the breeds in the other games will also become available in the kennels.

Nintendogs + Cats is compatible with the AR Cards that come packaged with the Nintendo 3DS system. Using the ? Card allows you to show your dog interacting with your environment, while using the AR Character Cards shows your dog wearing a hat related to that series:

One of the interior designs you can buy for your home is the Mario Style. The walls and floors are decorated with sprite artwork from Super Mario Bros., and a large green pipe leads to the outside.

Several items of furniture are themed after the Mario series.
A chair frame with red and green Koopa shell designs for the seat and back cushions.
A set of tables and stools, designed after the mushroom platforms from the Mario series.
An old-style TV set that displays images of dogs wearing Mario-themed hats in the Mario Style interior. Strangely, these hats don't appear to be available in the game.

One of the toys you can collect is a remote controlled Mario Kart, featuring either Mario, Peach or Yoshi. You can drive them around the house, and switch to a first person camera view.
You can also see Mario Karts on the shelf in the Barc store.
