An evil being known as Dark Matter has possessed King Dedede and stolen the rainbows that connect the Rainbow Islands of Dream Land. Kirby sets out to restore the rainbows with a little help from some new friends.
Kirby's animal friends must be rescued from minibosses and join with Kirby to make him stronger. Rick the hamster runs faster and can run on ice, Coo the owl can fly and Kine the fish is an excellent swimmer.
When Kirby uses his copy ability, the animal friend he is riding will change how the ability works. Combine them to make short work of enemies and find secret areas.

The miniboss, Blocky, was originally one of the enemies in HAL Laboratory's Adventures of Lolo series.
Chao
If you free the same animal friend as you're already riding, the sack will instead contain Gooey, who will refill your health. Infrequently, you will find Blob, a female Gooey, and she rewards you with an extra life.
In the original Japanese version, however, Blob's role is filled by Chao, the female protagonist from Famicom Fairytales: Yuuyuuki, a Japan only Famicom Disk System adventure game.
Sound Test
When you unlock the Sound Test, there is an image of Kirby, Rick, Kine and Coo sat around a table, while Gooey and Blob are in the background playing a piano.
Again, in the Japanese version, it is Chao who appears playing the piano, recreating the ship's lounge scene from Famicom Fairytales: Yuuyuuki.
