Samus Aran responds to a distress signal on the planet Aether. The impact of a meteor on the planet tore it into alternate dimensions of dark and light. While the inhabitants were unable to cross from one realm to another, now the dark warrior race Ing have broken into Light Aether, and war has broken out.

Samus travels between the light and dark dimensions, gathering weapons and upgrades that will allow her to bring an end to the Ing. At first, Samus must travel the dark dimension using lamps to guide the way before upgrading to a suit that allows her to freely explore.

A new multiplayer deathmatch game allows up to four players to compete to find weapon upgrades and destroy each other.
