The Pilotwings flight academy is looking for new recruits. Choose a character and earn your Pilotwings license by mastering each of the flying vehicles in a series of challenging missions.
The main vehicles include the hanglider, rocket belt and gyrocopter. Each mission awards points based on time/fuel used and the accuracy of your landing, but your score will also depend on specific mission objective. Clear missions to move up the ranks and unlock new missions.
As well as the main missions, there are also bonus missions to play, such as Cannonball and Parachuting, or find the hidden Stars in each stage to freely explore as a winged Birdman.

On the Little States stage, George Washington's face on Mount Rushmore has been replaced by Mario. If you hit Mario's nose with a Gyrocopter missile or Human Cannonball, then his face transforms into Wario.
One of the playable pilots, Lark, is based on the Nintendo Power magazine comic strip character, Nester.

The playable character Robin is named after Nintendo Gameplay Counselor Robin Krause. This replaces the characters Japanese name, "Hooter", which was deemed inappropriate.
