Taking place between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion, Samus responds to a distress call from a Galactic Federation Bottle Ship. She is joined by her former platoon, under the watch of Adam Malkovich, as she uncovers the extent of the Galactic Federations meddling with the Metroids.
Metroid: Other M merges the side-scrolling and first-person gameplay of previous Metroid titles. By pointing the Wii Remote at the screen, Samus switches to a first-person view, giving her more attacks and allowing her to uncover secrets.
As Samus explores the ship, Adam Malkovich approves her weapons, allowing her to delve further into the Bottle Ship.

During the game, a number of flashbacks take place when Samus Aran was under Adam Malkovich's command on a large battleship. While it isn't visible during these cutscenes, when you unlock concept art for the ship at the end of the game it is revealed that the ship's name is VIXIV.
VIXIV was the name of the Space Tank in the Japan only Game Boy game X, and the DSiWare sequel X-Scape.
However, there is more to this story. In the canonical Metroid manga from 2002-03, it is revealed in Chapter 12 that Adam Malkovich captains a Federation battleship named the VIXIV IV.
Note:
In the unofficial fan translation of the manga, the name of the ship is given as Vixin IV, although this name is a translation error due to the similarity of the Japanese Hiragana characters for 'n' and 'bu' ('bu usually replaces 'vu', for which there is no character in Japanese).
