VS. Mach Rider – Endurance Course Version

Objective

At the start of each Round, you are given a distance that you must reach within a time limit. Cross the goal line within the time limit to advance to the next course.

There are 20 Rounds to play through, after which the game loops back to Round 1. There is no ending.

The maps are the same as the Route A maps from the NES version.

Differences from the NES Version

Technique

Crashing

There are no extra lives in this game. You only get a Game Over if you run out of time. Crashing costs around 10 seconds, and on most courses you can crash a couple of times and still make it over the goal line.


Countersteering

You need to maintain a high speed without skidding out of control. Countersteering is a critical strategy to beat this game.

Because your bike is highly prone to skidding in this version, you will want to stay at top speed and countersteer on every sharp corner. Rock the controls left and right to stay in control of your bike.

As countersteering is effective in the icy slip zones, you can stay at top speed and manage cornering more effectively than you can in the NES game.


Enemy Invaders

Pink, Green and Red invaders can be safely overtaken. Do not waste time or ammo on them.

If you encounter a Blue invader, stay at top speed and maintain some distance to overtake them. If you bump into one, they will pull up alongside you and try to bump you into roadside obstacles. Once they're next to you, they often stay there until you destroy it.

Purple Invaders still sneak up from behind. If they bump you, they can send you flying off the side of the road. Watch for where they will appear in your rear view mirror and try to stay out of their way.

Black Invaders will always pull up alongside you and aggressively shove you into the roadside barrels. An effective strategy is to drop your speed to fall behind them and shoot them in the back. If you get a few Black Invaders in a row, this can quickly decimate your ammo supply. Alternatively, you can stay in fourth gear and try bumping them back, or drop to third gear and follow behind where they can't get you. Just be mindful of the remaining time.

Strategy

  • A simple course with easy enemies and a handful of slippery hazards.
  • Get up to top speed as quickly as you can and speed past the enemy invaders.
  • You will have a few opportunities to get used to how slippery your bike is now. Take the time to learn how to effectively countersteer while the game is still easy.

Strategy

  • There are many sharp turns and oil spills to deal with. Countersteer effectively to stay on course.
  • As the target distance is shorter than the course, you won't loop before crossing the goal line.

Strategy

  • A winding course with a lot of turns.
  • The game will bring in Green and Red Invaders. Stay at top speed and ignore as many of them as possible.

Strategy

  • This course is absolutely covered in oil spills, and Red Invaders can drop even more. If you slip, countersteer to stay in control.
  • Blue invaders will show up and drop tacks. If you get stuck next to one, block it or shoot it on the turns.

Strategy

  • Winding roads broken up by long straights.
  • Red and Blue Invaders will try and pull up alongside you on some tricky corners. Avoid them if you can, shoot them if you can't avoid them.

Strategy

  • The roads start out winding then straighten out.
  • This course cruelly throws Black Invaders and icy slip zones at you for the first time.
  • Driving alongside a Black Invader at top speed and repeatedly bumping them is risky, but also the best way not to get caught out by the timer.

  • The course is made up of long straights with occasional sharp turns.
  • Don't get caught out! Icy slip zones will show up on the turns.
  • Purple Invaders make their first appearance, sneaking up from behind. Watch for them in the rear view and move out of their way.

Strategy

  • A bendy course. Be ready to countersteer a lot.
  • Pink Enemy Invaders provide a brief respite. After around 10 Km, Purple Enemy Invaders show up relentlessly until the end of the course.

Strategy

  • The course starts with some long straights that give way into some tricky cornering.
  • Blue and Purple Invaders show up to make life difficult. Try to avoid getting pushed around too much on the bends.

Strategy

  • Another very bendy course loaded with Purple Invaders.
  • If Purple Invaders cause you trouble while countersteering around corners, try dropping a gear temporarily. This can make it easier to avoid obstacles.

Strategy

  • A course made up entirely of alternating left-right turns.
  • Most of the turns are too short to cause you to skid too much, so focus on the enemies and not countersteering.
  • If a Blue Invader pulls up next to you on this course, it can get ugly. Drop back and blast it from behind.

  • Long straights, sharp bends and icy slip zones make up the majority of this course.
  • Purple Invaders feature heavily once again, but they are easier to avoid on the long straights.

  • This winding course is littered with slippery obstacles.
  • With 33 Km remaining, the course turns icy and stays icy until the end. Remain at top speed and countersteer round each corner.

  • This course has a lot of icy slip zones. Stay at top speed and focus on countersteering.
  • Blue and Black Invaders will show up to continually bump into you. Bump them right back, or drop speed and shoot them from behind.

  • Long straights, gentle turns and low-level Invaders provide a brief respite.
  • Purple Invaders start showing up in droves, but are easy to avoid on the straights.
  • If a Purple Invader is on your tail on the corners, drop speed to make it easier to avoid oncoming obstacles.

  • You can try to hang back, but you'll be at risk of running out of time. Stay at top speed and bump the Black Invaders to reach the goal.

Strategy

  • You start in an icy slip zone and face slippery tacks as well.
  • As soon as the slip zone vanishes, you'll be dealing with more Black Invaders for most of the course. Stay at top speed and keep bumping them.
  • You'll need to countersteer on the ice. Drop speed if the Black Invaders make doing this too difficult.

  • More ice and tacks start this winding course. Icy slip zones will show up throughout.
  • Purple and Black Invaders will show up to cause trouble, particularly on the ice. Use the same techniques as before.

Strategy

  • The bendy part of this course also turns icy, but much of it is nice long straights.
  • More Black Invaders to deal with. Keep bumping them at top speed and slow down on the ice if you need to countersteer.

Strategy

  • The long straights and gentle corners make this a fairly breezy final stage.
  • Purple Invaders appear, mostly causing trouble on the icy slip zones. Countersteer to evade them effectively.
  • If you're lucky, you may get a reprieve with some easy enemies in the final few Km.
