When you start a new game, Mario runs onto the screen and jumps into the paddle.
The US/PAL boxart also shows Mario controlling the paddle.

Mario Character Bonus Stages
After completing three stages you are taken to a timed bonus stage where the ball clears blocks without stopping. The bonus stage blocks are all in the shape of characters from Super Mario Bros.
- Stage 3 Bonus: Mario
- Stage 6 Bonus: Koopa Troopa
- Stage 9 Bonus: Blooper
- Stage 12 Bonus: Piranha Plant
- Stage 15 Bonus: Bullet Bill
- Stage 18 Bonus: Goomba
- Stage 21 Bonus: Cheep Cheep
- Stage 24 Bonus: Bowser

Mario Stages 16-18
Stages 16, 17 and 18 are all in the shape of Mario's head.
- Stage 16 is a static head
- stage 17 is the same as before, but this time it is scrolling off the screen
- Stage 18 starts the same again, but as it drops down it reveals an even larger Mario head facing in the other direction.

Classic Mario Clear Artwork
Once you have cleared the final stage, you receive a "Nice Play" congratulations screen. A piece of Mario artwork in the style of the arcade Mario Bros. accompanies it.
