Nintober
Way back in 2008, I was desperate to do a Halloween art project. At a coffee shop after work, I sketched a few Nintendo monsters and villains and posted them on the NinDB Forums as "Nintober".
I brought the project back in 2011 for social media and with some new rules: I would draw 31 Nintendo monsters in 31 days. I was able to keep up this pace for three years in a row, raising money for charity in the process.
Since then, I've dipped in and out of the project as time allows. I didn't think I'd be able to keep it going nearly this long, yet the well of ideas never seems to run dry. Nintendo really loves monsters!
So here they all are: Every Nintober entry archived on NinDB for the very first time.

Earlier in 2023, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom introduced Gloom Hands, and I knew I'd want to draw them for Nintober. I took the opportunity to cover a bunch of Nintendo series that hadn't previously been represented, as well as a few other games I'd played recently.

With a sleepless one-year-old, I wasn't planning to do any October entries in 2022. And even though I missed October entirely, I still wanted to drop a couple of fresh entries.

Between 2017 and 2021, I changed career trajectory, became a parent and then Covid-19 happened. Our second child was due to arrive in October 2021, so I returned to Nintober to pass the time until the big day. I also ditched Adobe Creative Suite in favour of Clip Studio Paint in 2021. Can you tell?

2017 was marked by family tragedy. Perhaps as a misguided attempt to distract myself, I attempted another 31 monsters in 31 days. It became clear that my head wasn't in the right place to pull it off, and I bailed out early.

After a year off, I returned with an all-new layout, bringing Nintober in line with the trophy descriptions from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Nintober was a little bit different in 2014. In order to raise some money for charity for suicide prevention, I took requests in exchange for donations of £20 or more. As such, many of the requests came in for monsters from non-Nintendo games. It was fun to mix it up. This was the last year to use the old Super Smash Bros. Melee style trophy template.

I once again collected for charity in 2013. Unfortunately, the year was also marred by computer failure followed by a family tragedy. The black and white "Nintober Unplugged" entries were the result of my main computer giving up after only 2 years. Shortly after getting it back from Apple, I got news that my youngest brother had died. I lost myself in the artwork for the remainder of the month and somehow made it to the end. This was the last time I did 31 monsters in 31 days.

Drawing 31 monsters in 31 days is an arduous task, it turns out. For 2012 I took the opportunity to raise some money for charity while I worked on the project. I chose the MS Society, and I was thankful to everyone who helped me raise a few hundred pounds for them.

2011 was the first year that I challenged myself to draw a different monster every single day of October. I had a shortlist of monster ideas, but I also took a lot of suggestions. Any I wasn't able to fit in ended up on a list and picked up in later years.

The first set of Nintober entries were focused more on Nintendo villains. They were only sketches, lacking the trophy-style descriptions found in later entries.
In 2013, I updated the original 11 with full colour illustrations.
