There are eight characters in this game. Three return from Wave Race 64, one is new, and the remaining four first appeared in 1080° Snowboarding (N64):

Dolphin Mode

The working title for the GameCube hardware was "Dolphin". Many N64 and GameCube titles made reference to the Dolphin name.

Wave Race: Blue Storm features a secret Dolphin Mode. On the Options screen, press START, Z and X together to unlock the Password option. Enter DLPHNMOD as the password, then enter Free Roam mode.

In Dolphin Mode you ride a dolphin instead of a jetski, and the level features a remix of Wave Race 64's title theme.

It's not clear if this is intended as a reference to the Dolphin working title, or an up-to-date version of Wave Race 64's secret Dolphin Mode. Or a little of both!
