Mario
The hero of the Mario series and a good all-round fighter. Mario primarily attacks with high jumps, spin attacks and fireballs.

Yellow and pink. The colours of Wario, Mario's greedy rival.
Foreman Spike
Brown and white. From official art for Foreman Spike, the villain of Wrecking Crew (NES)
Reverse Mario Bros.
Reverse colours, as seen on the box for Mario Bros. on the Famicom.
Yoshi
Mario's dinosaur friend. He has a long tongue and can eat his opponents, trapping them inside eggs. He can also throw eggs, pound the ground and flutter kick.

Red Yoshi first appeared in Super Mario World. It first appeared with dark purple shoes in Yoshi's Story.
Light Blue Yoshi.
Light Blue Yoshi first appeared in Yoshi's Island. It first appeared with purple shoes in Yoshi's Story.
Yellow Yoshi
Yellow Yoshi first appeared in Super Mario World. It first appeared with green shoes in Yoshi's Island.
Donkey Kong
The king of the jungle. Donkey Kong is a brute of a character with a long reach. He is the only character who can walk when carrying heavy items and characters.

Link
The Hero of Hyrule, and holder of the Triforce of Courage. Link appears as he did in Ocarina of Time. He attacks with his sword, bombs and boomerang.

Dark red tunic. Based on the Goron Tunic upgrade from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64).
Zora Tunic
Dark blue tunic. Based on the Zora Tunic upgrade from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
Blue Ring
Light purple tunic. Based on the Blue Ring upgrade from The Legend of Zelda (NES).
Samus
The Power Suit-enhanced heroine of the Metroid series. Samus attacks with her beam cannon and bombs, and can use her Screw Attack to recover.

Pink armour. Based on the Varia Suit upgrade from Metroid (NES).
Gravity Suit
Purple armour. Based on the Gravity Suit upgrade from Super Metroid (SNES).
Kirby
The pink hero of Dream Land. Kirby is a tough little fighter with a wide range of special abilities. He can turn to rock, use a cutter to recover and fly through the air. He can even suck up his opponents and steal their Standing Special attacks.

Yellow Kirby with orange shoes. Based on the second player character from Kirby's Dream Course (SNES), also known as Keeby.
Ice Kirby
Blue Kirby with dark blue shoes. Based on Kirby with the Ice copy ability, first appearing in Kirby's Adventure (NES).
Fire Kirby
Red Kirby with dark red shoes. Based on Kirby with the Fire copy ability as it appeared in Kirby Super Star (SNES)
Fox McCloud
The leader of the Star Fox team. Fox uses his Blaster and Reflector, but he's also very fast and has a wide range of martial arts moves to use in close-up fighting.

Pikachu
A cute electric mouse, and mascot of the Pokemon series. Pikachu stores electricity in his cheeks which he uses to attack. He's a small, quick target.

Luigi
Mario's timid brother. Luigi has mostly the same attacks as Mario, but they all work a little differently. He can jump higher than his brother, but he slides around more and his jump recovery is less reliable.

How to unlock:
Clear Bonus Practice 1 with all 8 starting characters, then defeat Luigi in a match.

Classic Luigi
White dungarees and hat, green shirt and flesh-coloured gloves. Based on Luigi's colour scheme from Super Mario Bros. (NES).
Jigglypuff
A cute Normal type balloon Pokemon. Jigglypuff loves to Sing to put her opponents to sleep. She can float through the air and use Rest to fall asleep. If Rest hits just right, it can be a devastating move.

How to unlock
Clear the 1P Mode (any character/difficulty), then defeat Jigglypuff in a match.
Captain Falcon
A bounty hunter and F-Zero Grand Prix champion. Captain Falcon is extremely fast, when running about but his powerful moves are often slow to use.

How to unlock:
Clear the 1P Mode (any character/difficulty) in under 20 minutes, then defeat Captain Falcon in a match.

Black and grey. Based on Captain Falcon's outfit in the Japanese F-Zero X TV commercial.
Blood Falcon
Red and pink outfit. Based on the clone character Blood Falcon from F-Zero X (N64)
Ness
A young boy from Onett in Eagleland who is tasked with saving the world. He has a range of psychic attacks as well as his trusty baseball bat and yo-yo.

How to unlock:
Clear the 1P Mode on Normal difficulty with 3 stock (any character) without using Continues, then defeat Ness in a match.
