About Wuhu Island

Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto has stated that he wanted to create a location that he could use across games of different genres. The result was Wuhu Island.

Wuhu Island

Despite this being considered the first game to feature Wuhu Island, it has been seen before in prototype form.

In an early Wii demo, a similar island appeared, and appears to have inspired Wii Sports Resort's Island Flyover. The jogging sections of Wii Fit also appear to be set on Wuhu Island.

Going back much further, the island also shares many landmarks with Holiday Island and Crescent Island from Pilotwings 64.

The name is a reference to Mario's joyful cry of "Woohoo".

The Queen Peach

The name of the island's luxury oceanliner is "Queen Peach", a reference to Princess Peach of the Super Mario series.

Mario Music in Hill Village

In the Island Flyover, when you fly close to the houses of Hill Village, you can hear the Mario "Miss" tune from Super Mario Bros.

At night, the Information icon for the village says: "It sounds like someone is playing an NES. Sounds like he needs help though."

Power Cruising

The Power Cruising game is essentially a jetski race in the style of the Wave Race series. The game's music also seems to be inspired by the series.

The sound effect when you start any of the races appears to have been taken directly from Mario Kart 64.

It's a Secret to Everybody

In the U.S. version of the game only, one of the stickers you can earn in Archery is named "It's a secret to everybody". This phrase was first uttered by characters in secret caves in The Legend of Zelda (NES).
