Star Fox and the Cornerian Army is faced with a new threat: a hive mind race known as Aparoids, capable of infecting life forms and machines. Beltino Toad discovers each Aparoid contains a Core Memory containing information about the Aparoid Queen. Fox must defeat the Aparoid forces and retrieve the Core Memories if they are to strike at the heart of this invasion.
Each stage takes place either from within the Arwing, or in on-foot assaults with an extensive array of weaponry. You receive medals in each mission for meeting certain conditions.
Up to four players can also take part in multiplayer battles where the aim is to use weapons and craft to defeat your opponents.

When Star Fox: Assault was first announced, it was under the name "Star Fox GC", and was going to be accompanied by an arcade title called "Star Fox AC" on the Triforce arcade board hardware. The game was never mentioned after this, and never saw release.
During the game you can unlock the Namco NES game Xevious by collecting all of the silver medals.
In the Japanese version, you can also unlock Battle City by collecting all of the bronze medals, and Star Luster by collecting all of the gold medals. These two Namco games were originally released only in Japan on the Famicom, and so were removed from the U.S. and European versions of Star Fox Assault as well.
On the Corneria stage, there are several holo-ads with the word "Dolphin" on. Dolphin was the working title for the GameCube, and many games referenced the name.
On the Corneria stage there is a building advertising a film called "The End of Katina" with credits for "The Solvalou Crew". Solvalou is the name of the ship in Namco's Xevious.

The Star Fox team's robot, ROB64, has the letters "NUS" emblazoned on it. NUS was the serial code for Nintendo 64 hardware. It stands for "Nintendo Ultra Sixty-four", the working title for the system.

The special flags you can find in the game are the same design as flags that have appeared throughout other Namco games, including Rally-X, Xevious and Gaplus.
