Shin Onigashima Guide Chapter 1
Morning in Nagakushi Village
The Old Man and Old Woman tell each other about the prophecies in their dreams.
- みる (Look) → いろり (Hearth)
There isn't enough firewood to light the hearth.
- みる (Look) → へや (Room)
There is a carrying frame with a knife attached, a straw hat and coat and a door that leads to the weaving room.
- とる (Pick up)
- いどう (Move) → しばかり (Grass Path)
The Old Man straps the carrying frame to his back to collect some wood from the mountain. The Old Woman picks up the coat and hat to go do the laundry by the river.
Collecting Firewood
The Old Man follows the grass path that leads to the mountains.
- いどう (Move) → しばかり (Grass Path)
- みる (Look) → くさ (Grass)
A strange boy appears from the overgrowth.
- はなす (Talk) → きんたろう (Kintaro̅)
- はなす (Talk) → きんたろう (Kintaro̅)
The boy speaks in broken English and introduces himself as Kintaro̅. The Old Man asks Kintaro̅ if he'd like to tag along to Mount Ashigara. Kintaro̅ agrees.
- いどう (Move) → しばかり (Grass Path)
The pair arrive in the forests of Ashigara Mountain and are confronted by a terrifying bear.
- はなす (Talk) → きんたろう (Kintaro̅)
The bear is Kintaro̅'s friend, Kumagoro̅. They ride off into the forest together, leaving the Old Man on his own.
- とる (Pick up) → しば (Firewood)
- いどう (Move) → いえ (House)
The Old Man loads the firewood into his carrying frame and heads for home.
On the way home, the Old Man gets lost in a bamboo grove.
- いどう (Move) → にし (West)
- いどう (Move) → きた (North)
- みる (Look)
One of the bamboo stalks start to glow with a bright light. The Old Man is sure he can hear something inside.
- つかう (Use) → なた (Knife)
The Old Man carefully cuts the bamboo stalk and a cute baby girl emerges. The Old Man is overjoyed and carries her home.
Doing the Laundry
On the way to the river, the Old Woman passes six Jizo̅ statues at the side of the road.
- みる (Look) → おじぞうさま (Ojizo̅-sama)
One of the statues isn't wearing a coat or hat. The Old Woman feels sorry for it.
- つける (Dress) → みのとかさ (Straw coat and hat)
- はなす (Talk) → おじぞうさま (Ojizo̅-sama)
The Old Woman dresses the Jizo̅ statue and prays to it for a child. This time it responds, thanking her and telling her to go to the river where something good will happen.
- いどう (Move) → かわ (River)
The Old Woman arrives at the river and begins to do the laundry.
- みる (Look) → かわ (River)
A rice bowl floats down the river.
- とる (Pick up) → おわん (Bowl)
The Old Woman fishes the mysterious rice bowl out of the river and hurries home with it.
Cooking the Rice
The Old Man and Old Woman arrive home. The Old Man is excited that their dreams have come true, and she shows the Old Woman the baby girl he found in the bamboo grove.
- みる (Look) → いろり (Hearth)
The hearth has been lit and the water has boiled.
- あける (Open) → おわん (Bowl)
- いれる (Put) → おゆ (Hot water)
The Old Woman peels the lid off the rice bowl up to the arrow, pours in the hot water, then seals the lid.
- はなす (Talk)
The couple pass time by discussing what name they might give to their baby girl.
- あける (Open) → おわん (Bowl)
The lid of the bowl is stuck. Suddenly, with a loud bang, a baby boy bursts through the lid of the bowl.
