Shin Onigashima Guide Chapter 2
The Errand to Ittai's Store
Time passes. Donbe and Hikari are eight years old. Morning arrives in Nagakushi Village, and Donbe, Hikari and their parents are sitting around the hearth.
- あける (Open) → とびら (Door)
The crane Otsu̅, who had cared for Donbe and Hikari for many years, announces she is returning home. She flies away, leaving behind several rolls of beautiful fabric.
- はなす (Talk) → おじいさん (Old Man)
The Old Man asks Donbe and Hikari to go on an errand to Ittai's Store in the next village. They must deliver the fabric and collect all the items in a letter. He hands them both to Donbe.
- いどう (Move) → そと (Outside)
As the children leave for their errand, the Old Woman gives some rice balls to Hikari so they don't get hungry.
Donbe and Hikari head towards the next village.
The Snow Woman and the Mouse
It's a straight road all the way to the next village.
- いどう (Move) → きた (North)
The sky turns dark and eerie. The ground is covered in snow. A strange white creature blocks the path. It's the Yuki-onna (Snow Woman). She is in a foul mood and refuses to let anyone pass.
- いどう (Move) → みなみ (South)
Donbe and Hikari retreat.
The children return to safety, but they don't want to return home without completing their errand.
- みる (Look) → みち (Road)
They look closely at the road and see a small hole nearby.
- みる (Look) → あな (Hole)
- みる (Look) → あな (Hole)
The hole appears to be very deep. When they listen closely, they can hear giggling.
- ひとかえる (Change Character)
- つかう (Use) → おむすび (Rice ball)
Hikari tries to eat the rice ball, but it slips from her hand and falls into the hole. A strange song comes out of the hole:
"The rice ball rolled away, falling falling."
A mouse pops out of the hole. It's the famous female college student mouse!
- はなす (Talk) → ねずみ (Mouse)
The mouse thanks Hikari for the delicious rice ball. She offers to help with the Yuki-onna and brings out a hand mirror.

- とる → (Pick up) かがみ (Mirror)
- いどう (Move) → きた (North)
Donbe picks up the mirror. They head back along the road toward the Yuki-onna.
- みる (Look) → そら (Sky)
- つかう (Use) → かがみ (Mirror)
Sunlight is peeking through the clouds. Donbe reflects the sunlight at the Yuki-onna. She shrieks at Donbe to put the mirror away.
- つかう (Use) → かがみ (Mirror)
When Donbe tries again, the Yuki-onna becomes entranced by her own reflection and cheers up. She takes the mirror and leaves. Now you can continue along the straight road.
- いどう (Move) → きた (North)
Ittai's Store
The children arrive at a lookout. They can see the whole village below.
- みる (Look)
- いどう (Move) → みせ (Shop)
They spot Ittai's Store and head down.
They arrive at Ittai's Store and hand over the package.
- わたす (Give) → とどけもの (Package)
- はなす (Talk) → いったい (Ittai)
Ittai gratefully receives the fabric. However, none of the items on the list are in stock. Ittai offers to bring them round later.

The errand completed, Donbe and Hikari head home.
The Dragon and the Oni
The children arrive home.

Hikari tells the Old Man and Old Woman about the Snow Woman. She then explains that the store didn't have the items on the letter.
At that moment, Ittai turns up at the house with the delivery. He complains that business has been bad ever since the arrival of the dragon that turns people into Oni by sucking out their souls. They've laid waste to the capital city and they're building a fortress on a nearby mountain.
Ittai leaves.

Donbe wants to fight the dragon, but the old man explains that they are large and terrifying. He then explains that the capital city is far away.
Everyone heads to bed.
Donbe and Hikari sleep uneasily and both get up in the middle of the night. They find a toolbox that the Old Man left out.
- みる (Look) → どうぐばこ (Toolbox)
- あける (Open) → どうぐばこ (Toolbox)
- みる (Look) → おわん (Bowl) or たけづつ (Bamboo Stalk)
The children find the rice bowl and bamboo stalk in the toolbox. At that moment, Kintaro̅ appears at the house, scaring them.
- はなす (Talk) → きんたろう (Kintaro̅)
Kintaro̅ explains (in broken English) that Donbe and Hikari were born from these objects and they are not from here. He suggests the children head to the river to verify what he's saying.
- いどう (Move) → そと (Outside)
The Mysterious Waterfall
The children arrive at the river.
- いどう (Move) → きた (North)
The children head North to the waterfall and see a mysterious glow coming from behind it.
- みる (Look) → いわ (Rock)
- いどう (Move) → のぼる (Climb)
Donbe climbs the rock face and arrives at a bamboo grove.
- いどう (Move) → きた (North)
- みる (Look) → たけ (Bamboo)
- とる (Pick up) → おちてるたけ (Bamboo Piece)
Donbe picks up a long bamboo piece he finds lying on the ground.
- いどう (Move) → みなみ (South)
- いどう (Move) → おりる (Descend)
- いどう (Move) → みなみ (South)
Donbe climbs back down to the waiting Hikari and they return to the river.

- みる (Look) → かわ (River)
The moonlight is reflecting off the surface of the water.
- みる (Look) → じめん (Ground)
The ground is covered in small stones.
- みる (Look) → そら (Sky)
There isn't a star in the sky on this gloomy, moonless night. But then what is shining on the surface of the water?
- とる (Pick up) → いし (Stone)
- はなす (Talk) → どんべ (Donbe)
- つかう (Use) → いし (Stone)
Hikari picks up a stone and throws it at the reflection and it bounces off.

- みる (Look) → つきかげ (Moonlight)
The moonlight is actually a dish, shimmering beneath the water's surface.
- つかう (Use) → おちてるたけ (Bamboo Piece)
Donbe uses the bamboo to fish the dish out of the water.
- いどう (Move) → きた (North)
- いどう (Move) → のぼる (Climb)
Donbe climbs the cliff to the top of the waterfall.
- みる (Look) → たけやぶ (Bamboo Grove)
- みる (Look) → たけやぶ (Bamboo Grove)
- みる (Look) → だれか (Somebody)
Donbe hears something strange coming from the bamboo grove. It sounds like sobbing. Something appears from the bamboo grove. It's a Kappa!
- はなす (Talk) → かっぱ (Kappa)
The Kappa was ordered to stop the water's flow when the cave started glowing. However, he lost his dish and now he doesn't have the strength.
- わたす (Give) → おさら (Dish)
The Kappa is overjoyed that you have returned his dish. He quickly runs off to stop the water's flow.
- いどう (Move) → おりる (Descend)
The waterfall has stopped flowing, revealing a glowing cave.
- いどう (Move) → たきのなか (Inside the Cave)
Inside the cave, a mysterious saucer-like objects sits, lights flashing.

- みる (Look) → どうくつ (Cave)
- みる (Look) → おばけなべ (Monster Saucer)
- みる (Look) → おばけなべ (Monster Saucer)
Hikari has a feeling she's seen it before. She reads the inscription on the side:
In the Dragon Palace, the Avatar of Darkness will be resurrected.
I must reincarnate in this land and put right this wrong.
A slot opens up on the saucer revealing a necklace and a bracelet.
- とる (Pick up) → くびかざり (Necklace) or うでわ (Bracelet)
The necklace jumps onto Hikari's neck and the bracelet jumps onto Donbe's wrist. They won't come off. The children agree it's time to return home.
- いどう (Move)
The Oni Attack
Donbe and Hikari arrive home to find Oni sucking out the souls of the Old Man and Old Woman using a bronze bell.
- たたかう (Fight)
Kintaro steps in front of them. He explains that people whose souls are sucked out turn into Oni. If their souls are freed, they can return to normal. If they want to rescue the Old Man and Old Woman, they should steal the bronze bell from the Oni fortress in the mountains.
Donbe and Hikari stand alone in their trashed house.

Hearing a strange sound at the window, they look out and see the Jizō statues marching away from the house. They leave behind some kibi dango (dumplings) and a koban (gold coin).
The children agree to wait until dawn before heading to the mountains.
