Inside the trunk is a hammer and a strange pipe. Upon closer inspection, the strange pipe is actually a telescope.

Donbe and Hikari rummage around in the ruins of a shack.

There is a sheer drop on the road into the mountains. There doesn't appear to be any way to cross it.

Hikari inspects the wall and spots two unusual indentations in the cliff face.

The Fork in the Road

Donbe and Hikari come to a fork in the road.

Along the right path, the children reach a dead end. Hikari notices that it's hot here.

There's no way to see the fortress from here, and no way to climb the cliff. After inspecting it closely, they find an unusually hot patch of rock.

  • (Use) → (Hammer) → (Cliff)

Donbe hits the cliff with a hammer, causing a geyser of hot water to gush out of it. Donbe is so surprised, he drops the hammer. The sulphurous clouds smell very strong.

The dead end erupts with hot spring water.

  • (Move) → (Back)
  • (Move) → (Left Path)

The pair return to the fork and head along the narrow left path. Any unnecessary movements here would cause them to fall into the chasm below.

There is a smelly sulphur ball on the narrow ledge.

  • (Look) → (Fortress)

The Oni Fortress looks sturdy, but the base looks very weak.

  • (Use) → (Telescope)

At first the fortress is swarming with Oni, but they disperse. It seems they do not like the strong smell of sulphur from the hot spring. The Oni leave their post to seal up the hot spring.

  • (Talk) → (Donbe)

They make a plan: Hikari will go inside the fortress, find the bronze bell and escape. Donbe will then destroy the fortress from the outside.

  • (Move) → (Fortress)
  • (Move) → (Forward)
The children arrive at the Oni Fortress.

The Ashes of the Tengu

The inside of the fortress seems to be completely empty. However, Hikari cannot shake the feeling she's not alone. A Tengu secretly appears behind her.

  • (Use) → (Telescope)

The unusual Tengu says "Oooh! What's that?", scaring Hikari.

  • (Talk) → (Tengu)
  • (Talk) → (Tengu)
  • (Talk) → (Tengu)

When all the Oni left, the Tengu snuck inside the Fortress. It's very interested in Hikari's telescope. Hikari tells him it makes far away things look bigger. He begs Hikari to let him have it.

  • (Talk) → (Tengu)

Hikari agrees to give him the telescope if he tells her where the bronze bell is being held. He doesn't want to say for fear of angering the Oni, but lets slip that it's in the back room.

  • (Give) → (Telescope)

To thank her for giving him the telescope, the Tengu offers to give Hikari a bag of ash containing the remains of an invisibility cloak he burnt up by mistake. However, he got it mixed up with a bag of ash he stole from a flower-blooming old man. Hikari must choose which bag to take.

  • (Blue)

Hikari turns invisible.

  • (Move) → (Further Inside)
The Tengu presents Hikari with a choice of two bags.

An Oni stands guarding the bronze bell. It seems some of them did stay behind.

  • (Pick up) → (Bronze Bell)
  • (Use) → (Sulphur Ball)
  • (Move) → (Escape)

Hikari grabs the bronze bell and throws the sulphur ball. The Oni recoils from the smell, giving her enough time to escape.

The Oni guard looks surprised as an invisible Hikari makes off with the bronze bell.

With Hikari safely out of the fortress, Donbe prepares to destroy it.

  • (Use) → (Bomb)
  • (Move) → (Escape) – select quickly

Donbe escapes and the fortress explodes, crumbling to the ground.

The Tengu emerges from the exploded fortress. Hikari points out that the bronze bell is empty. The Tengu reveals that the souls are sent to Onigashima in the West.

Taking the bronze bell for safekeeping, the Tengu flies away.
