After Wario's plans for stealing Mario's castle failed (see Super Mario Land 2), he decided to obtain a castle through alternative means. He heard rumors about the pirates of Kitchen Island and how they had stolen a giant golden statue of Princess Toadstool. Thinking it would be easy to steal the statue off the pirates (as well as everything else), Wario set off to gather the riches to purchase the castle he desired.

Unfortunately, he underestimated the strength of the Brown Sugar Pirates, especially their leader, Captain Syrup.

Not much is known about this mysterious woman. On rare occasions, she has been sighted with a mob of spear-wielding pirate gooms, and one source refers to her reputation as being "really rotten and ruthless." Perhaps Wario, in his vanity, did not think anyone could be more rotten and ruthless than himself, but the pirates still proved a force to be reckoned with. Indeed, Wario struggled as he battled across the treacherous Kitchen Island. If it weren't for a collection of powerful headgear it might have been impossible for him to succeed. Wario stormed Syrup Castle and defeated Syrup's mighty genie, but in a final plee for escape, Syrup used powerful explosives to pulverize her own castle and leave Wario with nothing but his treasure. He didn't even get the statue of Princess Toadstool - as Mario arrived to reclaim it. Wario did, however, end up with enough funds to buy a decent castle from the genie. But, unknown to him, Captain Syrup was waiting to get her revenge.

One quiet morning, Wario slept peacefully in his new castle, dreaming of power and treasure. Syrup, now claiming to run the Black Sugar Gang, struck at just this moment. She and her pirates moved quickly, overtaking the castle in no time at all and removing its contents. Being mean and surly would not be enough for Wario this time. He would have to match wits with Syrup if he ever hoped on seeing his precious treasure again. Syrup not only constructed mind-boggling puzzles for her unfortunate victim, but she created technological monstrosities as well. Wario was up to the challenge. He solved Syrup's puzzles, tumbled her army of bosses and avoided her deadly explosives. But even after defeating her he had not won the day. Syrup, once again proving her intellectual prowess, had hidden Wario's most prized artifacts in the most obscure locations. Indeed, he had plenty of backtracking to do if he wanted to get back everything he had lost.

Speculation ensues over whether Syrup safely escaped her battle with Wario, and whether she will strike again. A warning to Wario: do not be surprised if she does.
